Back in the game

So, Holly and I have been bad about keeping up with our spaces page, which means we are out of the competition.  However, that doesn't mean we are going to give up on our weight loss journey.  We have had a bad couple of weeks because our lives have been very hectic.  But we are ready to get back on the ball.  We haven't gained weight, but we haven't loss any either.  I will update when that happens.

Until then... take care!

No motivation

Ok... so there is good news and bad news about this week.

The bad news is that we haven't been working out.  We have no excuses... it just hasn't happened... at all this week.  Next week should be better.  We suck.

The good news is that we resisted the urge to go to McDonalds last weekend.  We were both craving McDonalds and after much discussion, we decided that it simply was not worth it.  We rock!

Overall, I believe we are doing much better.  We have been sticking to our diet... i mean... lifestyle change - and our bodies are thanking us for it.

Weekly weight loss - Holly - 5 pounds for a total of 15 pounds loss, Becky - 1 pound for a total of 6 pounds loss.  Yay us!

The weigh in...

Last night we weighed ourselves.  Holly has lost an amazing 10 pounds in one week!  I have lost 5 pounds.  I was hoping for a 10 pound loss, like holly, but a loss is a loss.... right?  And... 5 pounds in one week is a great accomplishment!  We are continuing with our plan.  We eat by 7 pm every night and our dinner is usually a meat and veggie.  For breakfast we eat healthy cereal with skim milk and for lunch we have a weight watchers smart ones.  Sometimes we will have two small snacks throughout the day, like a yogart or fruit.  According to the book "French Women Don't Get Fat", it's good to eat yogart at least twice a day because yogart has parasites in it that eat your fat cells.  Interesting, isn't it?

That's all for now.  More to come later.

in a rut

Today, Holly and I are having a hard time getting motivated.  We know we should be at the gym, but for some reason, we can't motivate ourselves to get there.  Hopefully tomorrow will be better.

7 Diet Mistakes You Can Avoid

I found this article in Yahoo...

7 Diet Mistakes You Can Avoid Posted Thu, Jan 10, 2008, 1:37 pm PST

No matter if you are trying to lose weight, maintain your weight, or just eat healthier this year, the concept of diet will emerge at some point.

New diets are coming out all the time and some are better than others, but too often we sabotage a new eating plan or healthy eating choice. This year, be aware of these seven common diet mistakes and steer clear of them.

  1. Setting unrealistic goals. When you set goals for a diet, make sure those goals are achievable. Don't try to do everything at once and then expect to suddenly weigh what you did in high school. An example of an attainable goal might be to eat two snacks of fresh fruit every day and three servings of vegetables between lunch and dinner.
  2. Eating only one time each day. I often hear that people, in order to "save" calories, are skipping breakfast and lunch and only eating dinner. Let me tell you: This plan will save you no calories and can squelch your metabolism in the bargain. Eating three meals a day is important to your general health.
  3. Thinking short-term only. This is why people lose and then regain weight so quickly. A change in diet isn't meant to be just for a few months; it should become a lifelong habit. Think long-term changes.
  4. Underestimating your food portions. We are all guilty of this. Research shows that, when recalling foods consumed, most people under-report the amounts they ate. You may think that you only are having one cup of cereal — but use a measuring cup just to be sure.
  5. Making your diet plan too restrictive. When starting a diet, people usually err on the side of caution and eat too little — a practice they aren't able to maintain long-term. Also, a diet never means excluding major food groups like whole grains, fruits, or dairy.
  6. Not having a support system. When working on eating healthier, the more support you have the better. Tell others around you about your goals and let them know how they can best help you.
  7. Forgetting about exercise. People often ask me, "Which one is more important, diet or exercise?" I reply, "Do you want your airplane to have one wing or two?" Diet and exercise need to be done together — don't forget to exercise regularly.

A little update

As the week passes we want to update everyone on our progress.  We haven't weighed in just yet, but we both feel the difference in our body.  We have more energy during the day and at night.  Before we started our lifestyle change, we would come home exhausted and plop down on the couch.  Now we have more energy to take care of the little things around the house and spend more time with each other.  Not only has one week improved our health, but it has also improved our relationship.  My size 18 is starting to feel a tiny bit loose... nothing dramatic... but a difference.  Holly said that she can't feel the difference in her clothes, but she does feel stronger.  Doing yoga throughout the week is helping us to strengthen our core muscles... it is also a stress reducer.  I highly recommend yoga to anyone who is trying to lose weight.  We DVR'd a show called 'inhale' that shows on the Oxygen channel every morning from 6 - 7 am eastern time.  The instructor is great!  He has a wonderful sense of humor which makes the time pass with ease.

We plan to weigh ourselves within the next week.  I will post again with our new weight.

We also want to say thank you for the support we have received.  We use that support to get us through the tough times.  Your kind words become our inspiration.

Thank you!!

morning yoga

This morning was a little hard for me.  I didn't want to get out of the warm, comfortable bed.  I also had a small headache that was just enough to annoy me.  But I did get up... put on some workout clothes and went into the living room to do some yoga.  I found a yoga show on the Oxygen channel called 'inhale'.... or is it 'exhale'.  I don't know.  Anyways... I did this one yoga move that opens up your ribs and after the pain went away, the stretch actually felt pretty good!  After my yoga session, I felt great and my headache was gone.  Isn't yoga wonderful!

The weekend was hard to get through.  Holly and I usually eat at McDonald's for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.  I wonder how McDonalds will be able to stay in business now that Holly and I are no longer buying their food?

Today is a new day.

so it begins...

Holly and I decided to make this year's resolution to be about weight loss.  Holly is starting at 195 and I am at a shameful 210.  But never again.  Holly's goal is to lose 50 pounds and mine is to lose 60.  If we are able to lose more than that, then great!  But we want to set goals that are we feel can be met.  We have done this before... the holidays come... we stuff our face, put on the pounds and then new years is here and everything changes.  What makes this year different???  Holly and I want to have a baby. I will be the first to carry and as stated on the biggest loser last week, a woman's weight can conflict with her being able to conceive.  I don't want my weight to come in between us having a child.  If/When we have a child, we want to be able to keep up with them and see them grow to be successful adults.

Ever since I can remember, I have always been overweight.  When you grow up with the extra weight you tend to build a defense system to overcome the verbal abuse that is given by your peers.  That defense for me was food.  I have tried many diets in the past that have done nothing but caused a yo-yo effect.  I hope this one will be different.

Holly used to be in great shape - she worked at a gym and kept up with her lean body by working out everyday.  Then the years added up and so did the pounds. Throughout college the unhealthy eating started.  Fast food became a convenient alternative to the healthy home cooked meal.  After we had our commitment ceremony there was a sense of comfort and what we ate didn't matter.  Soon after, the pounds added up and that's where we are today.

We would like to feel good about ourselves again and with The Biggest Loser - Million Pound Match-up we plan to be motivated to achieve our goals.  Our weight goal is to lose a combined 110 pounds (50 pounds for Holly and 60 pounds for me).  Our plan is to keep our daily calorie intake at 1200 calories a day, incorporate fruits and vegetables and an exercise routine that involves cardio, yoga, and weight training.  This is going to be a long, hard road but we are up for the challenge.  I feel we deserve to win the Million Pound Match up if we are able to cross this bridge together, avoid our cravings, and stick to our goal.

This space will document our progress and will include short video confessions of our thoughts and challenges.  Stay tuned... there are bound to be ups and downs.
